What are the benefits of learning music?
Benefits of learning a musical instrument includes: Enhances cognitive development, emotional expression, discipline, social skills, creativity, and stress relief.
At what age can my child start music lessons?
Children can start as early as 3-4 years old, with age-appropriate instruments and lesson formats. If your child is younger, I suggest starting on Piano. Many of my best students have a basic grounding in piano prior to starting a wind instrument. For wind instruments including Saxophone, Clarinet & Flute, I'd recommend 8 to 9 years old, dependent on size of the child.
How do online music lessons compare to in-person lessons?
This depends on where you are in your musical endeavours. I personally don't recommend this for someone who's a complete beginner as they usually benefit hugely from hands on direction in the early stages. Once you have a basic competency on the instrument of choice either is suitable. Bear in mind the obvious differences, online lessons offer flexibility and access to diverse teachers but lack physical interaction. In-person lessons provide hands-on adjustments but may be less flexible with timings.
What should I look for in a music teacher?
Ask prospective teachers about qualifications and teaching experience. I suggest getting a one off lesson to ensure that the teaching style matches your style of learning.
What questions should I ask a potential teacher?
Inquire about their teaching experience, approach to lessons, expectations, and how they measure student progress.
How often should I have music lessons?
This is nuanced, depending on how developed you are on your instrument. I typically recommend, weekly lessons, especially for students who are just beginners or younger. This provides consistent 'check- ins' and aids in consistent progress and skill development, as long as there is the correct amount of input from the student.
