About
I'm Ben Lowman, a versatile musician specialising in Saxophone, Clarinet, and Flute, as well as a a skilled educator and instrument repairer based in the North of England.
I graduated with honours (BA Hons) from Leeds College of Music in 2011, and my musical journey has taken me through various settings, from original projects to theatrical productions.
My passion for music revolves around three key areas: performance, education and instrument repair.
Performance
Performance has been central to my musical journey. I’ve developed my skills in various ensembles, most recently with the band 'Perpetual Motion Machine' (PMM). We released our debut album 'Ignition' after a successful UK tour. While I appreciate contemporary jazz, I also have a deep affection for jazz traditions, particularly Gypsy Jazz. I enjoy composing and arranging music, with my latest composition, 'Fog Circle,' featured on the PMM album, inspired by my experiences trekking in Nepal.
Education
My love for teaching is equal to my love for performance. After graduating, I collaborated with various educational organisations, including Jazz Yorkshire (now Jazz North), introducing improvised music to students in rural North Yorkshire. This ignited my passion for sharing musical knowledge. I have worked closely with the music charity North Yorkshire Music Action Zone (NYMAZ), aiming to expose young audiences to diverse musical genres. Besides one-on-one instruction, I have conducted youth and adult workshops in Leeds, York, and Sheffield.
Instrument Repair
I derive great satisfaction from the art of instrument repair, particularly focusing on woodwind instruments. Witnessing the joy of a student when their instrument is working perfectly is deeply fulfilling for me.
My Journey
My musical journey began in Devon, heavily influenced by my father’s eclectic record collection. Albums like 'Spirit of Django' by Martin Taylor and 'As We Speak' by David Sanborn left a lasting impact on me and set me on the path to a music career. I began playing the Saxophone at 10, performing in various ensembles, including the Devon Youth Jazz Orchestra (DYJO), college big bands, and professional function bands. These experiences showed me that a career in music was not only possible but deeply fulfilling.
Education and Mentorship
After completing my studies and a B-tec National Diploma in music at Exeter College, I enrolled at Leeds College of Music from 2008 to 2011. Studying under some of the UK’s finest musicians and educators, such as Joel Purnell, Jim Corry, Jamie Taylor, Mark Donlon, and Kathy Dyson, was instrumental in my growth as a musician. I graduated with first-class honours and have since collaborated with a diverse array of musicians and bands on both regional and national stages.
Current Endeavours
My current endeavours are divided between education, performance, and instrument repair. I teach regularly at the Grammar School at Leeds and through private instruction. My performances continue with two touring theatre productions: 'Northern Live' and 'The Last Days of Disco.' Lastly, I offer repair and servicing for woodwind instruments, ensuring fellow musicians students can maintain their instruments in perfect working order.
Thank you for exploring my musical journey. I look forward to sharing more with you in the future.
